Check out my post just like this here - http://newlywoodwards.blogspot.com/2009/08/camera-advice-please.html. I had some good recommendations.
I ended up buying a dSLR, Nikon D60. I'm no professional, but it takes noticiably better photos. When I started posting photos from it, people noticed. It's not cheap, but I'm expecting to keep it for a LONG time.
Good luck!
My husband purchased the d60 for me also. He said he did a ton or research and what not and this was the camera I needed. I do love it a lot. The best advice I could offer is to go to a specialty camera shop. They will have several models for you to hold and handle. What works for some, doesn't work for others. I have had a lot of people say my d60 is too big for their hands. I have giant man hands, so I don't notice. Lol.
I have a Canon Rebel XS that I love. I bought mine from B&H Photo (online). They have awesome deals - I got my body and two lenses for only $500.
Ditto Cecilia, though - I'd definitely hold a few different cameras before choosing one.
Good luck! I know nothing in this department except that I hate mine!
